- Size. Height and trunk width set how much wood there is to cut, lower and clear. It is the biggest single factor.
- What is underneath. A tree in an open paddock can often be felled in one piece. The same tree over a house, a garage or a neighbour's fence has to be climbed and taken down in sections, which takes longer.
- Access. Whether the truck and chipper can get close, or everything has to be carried out down a long driveway or up a bank.
- Power lines and roads. Work near lines or beside a road needs extra planning, and sometimes traffic management or the lines company involved.
- The wood. Chipped and left as mulch, cut into rounds and left on site, or taken away completely. Removal costs more than leaving it.
- Stumps. Whether you want the stump left at ground level or ground out as part of the same visit.

Questions People Ask a Whangarei Arborist

Do I need council consent to remove a tree in Whangarei?
For most trees on private property, no. The exceptions are trees protected by the Whangarei District Plan, such as trees scheduled as notable, and some trees in protected areas or close to waterways and the coast. If there is any chance your tree is one of them, check with Whangarei District Council before anything is cut. We will tell you at the quote if we think a tree might be protected.
How do I know if a tree is dangerous?
The warning signs are large dead branches, cracks or splits in the trunk or where big limbs join, fungus or soft rot at the base, a lean that has recently got worse, and soil or roots lifting on one side after wind. Any one of these is worth an arborist's look. Plenty of trees that look worrying turn out to be sound, and we will tell you honestly which kind yours is.
Can you work on a tree near power lines?
Trees near power lines come with rules about how close anyone can work to the lines, and some of that work can only be done with the lines company involved - in Whangarei that is usually Northpower. When is the best time of year to prune?
For most trees, late winter while they are dormant, because the cuts close quickly once growth starts in spring. Fruit trees differ: apples, pears and citrus are usually pruned in winter, while stone fruit such as plums, peaches and apricots are best pruned in late summer after picking, when they are less prone to disease. Hedges are trimmed through the growing season. Dead or dangerous branches can come off at any time.
What happens to the wood and branches?
Branches go through our chipper on site. The chips can be left for your garden beds, which makes good mulch, or taken away. Trunk wood can be cut into rounds and left for you to split for firewood, or removed. Tell us what you would like when we quote and the price will reflect it.
